The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) is promoting National Electrical Safety Month (May) by reminding the public to be aware of the risks associated with the use of electricity, and providing safety tips to assist individuals in taking steps to reduce the risk of experiencing a home electrical fire.

In recent years an average of 53,000 home electrical fires has been reported per year. These fires resulted in an average of 500 deaths, 1,400 injuries, and $1.5 billion in direct property damage per year. One of every seven home fires was an electrical fire. Any type of equipment that uses electricity may be involved in an electrical fire. Some type of electrical distribution equipment such as wiring, light switches, outlets, cords, and plugs or lighting equipment was involved in roughly half of the home electrical fires. There are also many home electrical fires involving air conditioners, fans, clothes dryers and appliances.

If you are actively flipping a switch, inserting a plug, or simply enjoying all the electric-powered appliances in your home, the risk of fire may not be on your mind. Most electrical fires can be easily avoided. The first step in preventing them by being aware of the danger, the second is to learn some of the rules of fire safety. Above all is to practice fire safety.

Irons draw a lot of power and when used on a standard lighting circuit lights begin to dim. The Iron itself will use most of the electricity supplied. It is a recommended to add a circuit for the iron in a most used location of the home. A twenty amp circuit would be the perfect choice.
Make sure that you have a permit for electrical work and call for an inspection. This holds true even if you do the work yourself. Purchasing a permit in the beginning is the law and will save you many headaches down the road when you try to sell the home or in the event of something going wrong.

It has been suggested that early electricians at the turn of the century were a paranoid lot. This was a new, untested medium that was replacing familiar gas lighting. These electricians weren’t interested in developing reputations as de facto arsonists. Wiring at the time was pretty simple to begin with, usually just lighting circuits, one receptacle per average-size room, and a very small service or fuse box. Electricians used lead solder followed by tape to join wires and do their work safely.

Your dealings with electricity should be equally safe, whether you’re installing a new circuit or screwing in a light bulb. Electricity always is seeking an easy way to travel. Sticking your fingers, screwdrivers, or car keys into light sockets or receptacles provides these charged particles with an alternative path to moving along a wire. An improperly grounded toaster can cook more than your bagels. For now, you’ll need to keep a few rules in mind when dealing with your electrical system:
1.	Don’t handle anything electrical if you’re wet or are standing on a wet surface.
2.	Never overload a circuit beyond its capacity.
3.	Extension cords are for temporary use only.
4.	Never start an electrical repair or addition until you’re sure how to do the job correctly and the power is shut off.
5.	When a problem is beyond your expertise, call a licensed electrician.

Left to its own electrical devices, electricity wouldn’t be much good to us because it requires some discipline to be useful. This discipline, in the form of electrical current, corrals the charged electrons that make electricity and directs them so they can power our lights, computers, and electric apple peelers. Your local utility company’s generators produce the electricity and then “pipe” it to your home through wires and transformers. The only time this is of any great interest to you is when there’s a disruption in the distribution system that results in your power going off and your digital clocks reverting to that annoying, flashing 12:00 signal when the power comes on again. Once the power lines enter your house, your interest naturally perks up. Here, the comfort and safety of you and your family are your number-one concerns.

So many people take electricity for granite. Watching, listening and looking at the internet there are fires happening daily due to electrical issues. Loose cord connections, bad plug outlets, lights flickering, bad breakers, sparks, extension cords and the list goes on for cause of fires. A lot of those fires could have been eliminated by looking over the electrical in the home at least once every few years. Home owners are not aware of issues that may be causing these fires which sometimes turn deadly. Take plugging in a cord to an outlet and it loose. Most will wiggle it around until it works. The cord and plug outlet will work but the electricity will be jumping between the cord metal prongs and the plug. This will cause heat to build up and melt the outlet. If the breaker does not do its job quick enough a fire can be the result.
There is a huge need for electrical awareness for home owners. People renting also need to be aware of these issues to protect themselves. A thirteen year boy once said “Dad why do you tell people to fix things that are not broken”? Preventive maintenance and observation will aid in preventing electrical fires. It will aid in preventing property damage and saving lives. Home owners must make themselves aware of electrical safety.
