Home Owner's beware

So you’re having new siding installed on your house? Are you getting the house repainted? How about putting up new light fixtures? Who’s taking down the light fixtures and reinstalling them? Is the painting or siding contractor or even your neighbor doing this? Or is an electrical contractor?
The biggest thing that comes to mind is “HOME OWNER BEWARE”! If electrical work is done by others that are not electricians or electrical contractors you are truly putting yourself, your family and your home at risk of fire, or possibly someone getting shocked that may result in death.
Absolute Electric, Inc., specializes in “Home Electrical Service and Repair” in S.W. Washington.
We are in many homes yearly and see other construction trades completing electrical work for home owners. Most all of the work done has not been completed with an electrical permit when it may be needed. As a result of this home owners have had to pay twice to get the job completed correctly and to code.
Frequent findings are that homes are being resided without electrical outlet boxes. Many times the original box is still installed but not brought out to the new siding depth. When this happens combustible material is exposed. If the wires were to short-out, a fire would not be contained inside the box, resulting in a wall or house fire. GFCI protection and bubble covers are needed on outdoor plugs. We have found that most of the times this has not been done to code.
We understand that contractors are trying to save money and time for themselves and home owners. After helping home owners for over 12 years, it really comes down to “HOME OWNER BEWARE”. If these improvements are not done correctly, it may cost you more than it would have been to have done it correctly the first time.
