Keep Attics Clear of Stuff Vancouver Washington

We go in thousands of homes for electrical service and repairs. Many of the jobs require that we go into the attic for trouble shooting an electrical issue. Too many times we find that our customer has stored unused boxes, carpet and other belongings in the attic. This poses a very unsafe situation. The attic trusses and the drywall attached them are only designed to carry so much weight. We find many ceilings that are bowed and drywall cracked. The other safety issue about storing stuff in the attic is the fire hazard. If a fire were to happen in the home and get to the attic with the belongings stored up there, the fire would have a lot of fuel to burn thus making it harder for the fire department to put out the fire without more damage. Also the sure heat that is in the attic makes everything dry and easy to start a fire under the right conditions.

If you can store your old boxes, carpet, belongings in a shed, garage or storage unit. If not there then recycle or have a huge garage sale and donations afterward s with the balance of stuff.

Stuff is fun to have but can cause you a lot of grief and loss if not taken care of.

Replace Two-Prong Outlets in Your Home Vancouver Washington

This can be an easy task for those who are familiar with doing electrical work. However, there are some things you need to know before doing the replacements.

You cannot just replace the plug outlets with a three pronged outlet unless there is a ground wire present and one that is really connected to ground. If no ground is present then a GFCI plug outlet can be installed. The GFCI plug comes with stickers that state “GFCI Protected” and “No Ground Present”. These stickers need to be installed on the cover plate of the plug outlet. You can install one GFCI outlet and feed the remaining outlets downstream of it off the load side of the GFCI plug. Again you will be placing the stickers on each outlet.

The point of the stickers is to let everyone using the plug outlets that it looks like you have a ground present at the plug when in fact you don’t. This is good to know when using computers and other metal appliances. The GFCI gives you added personal protection.

Kick the habit of using three prong adapters in your home. Bring your home a little closer to the 21st Century using three-prong outlets.

It is always best to never take risks with electrical. Too many things not done right can cause fire and the possibility of someone getting shocked. Call in the experts for your electrical safety.

How to Hire an Electrician Vancouver Washington

As a homeowner, you’re responsible for all home electrical repairs. It is your responsibility that you protect yourself and those who live with you. The following electrician checklist should help provide you with valuable information about how to hire an electrician.

1. Referrals from friends or neighbors that have already used them in the past.
2. Get a few electrical price quotes. This will give you a chance to compare notes and see who has the best ideas for what you are trying to accomplish. Remember the lowest bid is not the best choice. There are reasons that they are the lowest. They will have to cut corners somewhere and electrical is not the place to have that happen. Keep in mind three bids and no more. You don’t want to waste yours and theirs valuable time.
3. Ask for references. If you’re skeptical, find others who have utilized their services. An experience electrician will have a solid base of past customers to refer you too.
4. Inquire about their guarantee policy. When you are hiring an electrician, find out if they are willing to come back if a problem recurs or persists. Make sure it is in writing. No concrete guarantees, so as they leave your concrete you have no guarantee.
5. Make sure they look the part. When you are hiring an electrician, presentation may be an important factor to consider. Look for a company logo, business cards, and preparedness. All of these factors may clue you into the reputability if the contractor you are employing. Is there van clean and organized?
6. When you are hiring an electrician, remember to talk permits. A good electrical contractor will not begin any job without discussing their permits. In the current economic climate, some people may be willing to do work which they are not licensed to complete. A good electrician will not make this offer and they will help you understand that their permit is your insurance should there be a problem.
Remember, you have to make a decision based on questioning and observation. You get what you pay for!
Know that choosing Absolute Electric, Inc. for your next electrical project or repair comes with a 100% Customer Satisfaction Guarantee! If for any reason the job is not done properly or if you aren’t fully satisfied with the quality of work performed by their electricians, we will do it again at no additional cost. Ceiling fans Vancouver Washington

It is nice to see how ceiling fans come in a wide variety of styles and colors to match any home owners interior. They come with the option of having a light and without. Blade options are three to five blades. There are many colors to choose from of black, white, brown, made of wood, covered with animal print fabric or styled with carved leaves.
Ceiling fans have been a great way to keep the house cool in the summer and circulate the heat in the winter months. They come with a direction switch for good air flow. Ceiling fans are much less noisy and obtrusive than box fans that sit on your floor or in your windows.
Before you purchase a ceiling fan you’ll need to consider the blade size. You don’t want to overwhelm a smaller room with a ceiling fan that’s too big. Another consideration before purchasing a ceiling fan is how far it will drop from the ceiling. A home with an 8 foot ceiling would probably use a three inch down rod for a ceiling fan, and a room with a fifteen foot high ceiling would need at least a one foot down rod, up to a five foot down rod. It is suggested that you have at least seven feet of clearance from the floor to avoid accidents. The longer the rod is from the ceiling the greater the chance of the fan wobbling.
A home owner can install a ceiling fan on their own if they have some type of electrical background. It is recommended that a licensed electrician hired to insure the installation of the fan is correct.
Either way you decide to have a ceiling fan installed in your home, make sure that the box it is being hung from is ceiling fan rated. Not all lighting outlet boxes are the same. A ceiling fan box is rated for the weight as well as any movement from the fan. The box is heavy duty with more support. A standard lighting outlet box can allow the mounting screws to back out of the box with any vibration causing the fan to fall from the ceiling causing someone injury.

Landlords guide to keep tenants safe Vancouver Washington

The Electrical Safety Council has launched a new guide to help landlords keep their tenants safe. This has come about due to a tragic death of a mother of two that was electrocuted while running some bath water. The council wants landlords to make sure the homes that they are renting or leasing out are safe for the tenants. It is recommended that an electrical inspection be completed by a licensed electrician periodically. They need to make sure the grounding and bonding are done correctly. Other things to consider are GFCI Protection, smoke alarms, bubble covers on outdoor outlets. Tenants should ask the landlord to see a “Periodic Inspection Report” before moving in.
The guide, which is supported by LACORS (the Local Authorities Coordinators of Regulatory Services), highlights each area of legislation relevant to landlords in the private rented sector, including:
• Landlords and Tenant Act 1985
• Housing Act 2004
• Management of Houses in Multiple Occupation (England) Regulations 2006 and Management of Houses in Multiple Occupation (Wales) Regulations 2006
• Part P of the Building Regulations
• Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order
• Electricity at Work Regulations 1989
The Landlords’ Guide to Electrical Safety is available to download free of charge at www.esc.org.uk.

30 million aging homes at risk, preventive electrical maintenance is extremely important.

Aging homes in America has hit over 30 million. These residential home structures are assumed by their owners that everything will last forever. However, there is a rising risk of electrical fires in these aging homes if not maintained properly and often.
Electrical fires in the residential market tops at 24,000 with hundreds of deaths and over $700 million in damages according to the National Fire Protection Association, NFPA.
Non-code compliant installations are often the result of many fires. Installers are not following the National Electrical code and unqualified installers, (mainly homeowners), are undertaking the task of completing the work of what an electrician or electrical contractor would be doing. When it comes to older homes with outdated, over used and inadequate wiring mistakes become costly.
The UL estimates that as many as 30 million homes in the United States, almost a third of the countries homes, is more than half a century old. Even if these homes electrical systems are in good shape, the load demands that we put on them creates a bigger risk of fire.
Common causes of electrical fires in older homes are:
Unsafe installations, poorly done electrical repairs, worn out wiring devices, compromised over-current protection, misuse of extension cords and makeshift circuit extensions, thermally re-insulated walls and ceiling which wire is buried, overburden and inadequate electrical systems.
Call your local electrical contractor today. Ask them to complete a whole home electrical safety inspection to see where you stand with your electrical system. Many complete a 12 to 20 point inspection for free while they are at your home.
If the electrical contractor, electrician, finds code related issues or out of date areas then you can have them fix, repair or replace while they are there. If not now then make a game plan of what to do next and the biggest thing plan the WHEN it is going to get done. Many home owners have good intentions of doing the corrections or updating themselves. However doing and getting actually done are two different things.
