Why is it important to hire a qualified electrical contractor?

Electrocution can kill! This should be reason in its self for you to hire and electrical contractor for electrical work to be done.
A qualified electrician has four to five years in electrical training, installation, and repair of electrical systems for your home. Once a person has passed the strict licensing tests will work under an electrical contractor’s comprehensive insurance for any potential mishap. Working for an electrical contractor is the only way to conduct electrical work for others.

There are numerous pitfalls that can have disastrous consequences when attempting electrical work as a do-it-yourselfer. Is your life, or your family’s lives, worth the few dollars you might save?

If you are looking at helping your neighbor or friends to do electrical work, you need to know that is illegal. It is also setting yourself up for liability that you may lose your home and belongings if something were to go wrong, even if you did it right.

Note: If you are unsure about any of the above or do not feel safe, please contact an electrical contractor. Or if the circuit breaker keeps tripping itself off then it’s a sign to call in the experts. Always choose safety first. Your family will thank you for it.

Unplug all cords in your house and check the outlet.

One of our main service calls for home owners in Vancouver Washington is “our power went out and we checked the breakers and still nothing”.
We all leave our cords to everything plugged in 24/7 365 days a year. The cord ends over time get loose in plug outlets, heated up at the plug outlet, or just get over used with time. The cords themselves may get knick in the wire and kinks in them which all cause fires and circuits to short out.
It is highly recommended to unplug all cords in your home to make sure the cord that is plugged in is still good. Look at the plug outlet and see if there is any exposed wear on the outlet. Is the outlet discoloring? Is the cord really easy to unplug and plug back in? Is the cord or outlet warm to the touch? Do your lights flicker any when you are checking it out? Do you smell any burnt smells while up close to the outlet? These are a few things to look at.
Older homes have plug outlets that just get tired and wear out. Some of the tired and worn out outlets are from direct use at the outlet and others from use on the circuit through the outlet. If your home is older than 20 years it would be a good time to look at them all.
If you replace the plug outlets yourself, remember that the code has changed and you need to install tamper resistant plug outlets.

Home surge protection is becoming a no brainier for electrical protection

We have on average of $15,000.00 worth of electrical devices in the home today. These devices range from small kid’s games, X-box, Play Station, to televisions, refrigerators, dryers, microwaves, computers and more, We put a lot of thought into what we are buying but not how to protect them from things we cannot see. Surges happen whether we are looking, using the electrical devices. Most of the time it is small surges over a long duration that end up making the item fall so you have to buy another.
Installing a home surge protection at the electrical service panel will aid in keeping your electrical equipment running longer without having to replace it as often. Who would have thought to put surge protection at the new wash machine? Just think how many electrical components are in there.
Having a plug in surge protector at your computer and television is great but you are leaving out all other pieces in your home. Ask any home owner that has had to replace all the electronics in their home how much they had to spend. An investment in whole house surge protection is worth the expense. It will not only save you time going and finding new items but money in the long run.
