Some storm we’re having. A few quick things to keep in mind until it’s all clear.
You might want to peek into your attic. The snow may be covering up your vents in your roof outside. If this happens the snow melts underneath and may dam up sending the water inside to your attic. There also maybe snow in your attic if it has blown in via the roof vents. We have already heard this has happened to a few people.
Watch your gutters. Mine are full of slush and ice. We have one that is iced over. The water that is melting and is backing up causing the water to go behind the siding and over a doorway. I have had to empty the gutter a few times to keep the water from getting into the wall. You may want to look at yours and see what is going on.
Some of the tree branches are sagging really low. Taking a broom handle or such and tap the branches. Doing so will help get some snow off and keep them from braking off. Keep an eye on over head power and phone lines. With the tree branches sagging down the weight may break the wires or bend the electrical meter mast. Do not touch any branches that are on the wires! Call Clark Public Utilities if it looks like the wires are not looking so good.
Keep the wiper blades up and off the windows of your cars and trucks.
Watch the melting snow around the foundation of your home. If you can move the snow away from the house so when it melts it will not go into the foundation vents and into the crawl space.
If you use a generator for power back up make sure the main break is off and or use the proper transfer switch. Make sure the unit is not next to the house or over roof overhangs. DO NOT RUN THE UNIT IN THE GARAGE. Vent the unit away from the home.
Don’t forget to keep your eyes on the pets.
Keeps some candles and flashlights handy. Keep warm and safe.

So you’re having new siding installed on your house? Are you getting the house repainted? How about putting up new light fixtures? Who’s taking down the light fixtures and reinstalling them? Is the painting or siding contractor or even your neighbor doing this? Or is an electrical contractor?
The biggest thing that comes to mind is “HOME OWNER BEWARE”! If electrical work is done by others that are not electricians or electrical contractors you are truly putting yourself, your family and your home at risk of fire, or possibly someone getting shocked that may result in death.
Absolute Electric, Inc., specializes in “Home Electrical Service and Repair” in S.W. Washington.
We are in many homes yearly and see other construction trades completing electrical work for home owners. Most all of the work done has not been completed with an electrical permit when it may be needed. As a result of this home owners have had to pay twice to get the job completed correctly and to code.
Frequent findings are that homes are being resided without electrical outlet boxes. Many times the original box is still installed but not brought out to the new siding depth. When this happens combustible material is exposed. If the wires were to short-out, a fire would not be contained inside the box, resulting in a wall or house fire. GFCI protection and bubble covers are needed on outdoor plugs. We have found that most of the times this has not been done to code.
We understand that contractors are trying to save money and time for themselves and home owners. After helping home owners for over 12 years, it really comes down to “HOME OWNER BEWARE”. If these improvements are not done correctly, it may cost you more than it would have been to have done it correctly the first time.

There are thousands of homes in SW Washington that have cable ceiling heat being used to heat their home. Many either love it or hate it.
For those that love it normally say… They like the idea of heating room by room instead of the whole house. They like this type of heat since it is quiet. It provides even heat in the room from the ceiling down. It doesn’t take up wall space.
The home owners that don’t like this type of heat normally say… They don’t like how the repairs end up looking. It doesn’t heat fast enough. Costs a lot to have running, (It is not an efficient type of heat). It is an out dated type of heat.
There are many ways to heat your home now. The most expensive is adding a forced air furnace with either a heat pump and or air conditioning unit. Then there are nice wall mount units like ConventAir. And if that is not your style then Cadet makes great in the wall units.
Technology has come a long ways. Choosing one of the above methods will make a big difference in your home. Many still believe in the thought of heating only the rooms that are being used verse heating the whole house. (Maybe with the times the way they are that is a great idea).
Changing from cable ceiling heat and existing thermostats to a new system of heat will help in energy costs, and eliminate repair costs. It will also offer a more effective way to heat your home.
